The Adventurer Series carries the largest models of Freedom Concepts single rider adaptive tricycles. This series is appropriate for riders ages 14 and up who have mild to significant physical impairment. These bikes are as suitable for riders with simple balance problems as they are for riders who have more complex issues associated with diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, head injury, muscular dystrophy, autism, and dwarfism. Adaptive bikes are powerful therapy tools that can help improve a rider’s strength, endurance, and coordination. They are also an extremely effective tool for promoting inclusion. The basic features of the Adventurer Series Tricycles make it easier for teens and young adults with special needs to pedal and steer. There are Quick Release Mechanisms on all adjustable parts to swing away the bike’s components for transfers. With a special “step-through” design, getting onto this bike is as easy as sitting down in a comfortable chair. Quick Release Mechanisms also facilitate effortless adjustments needed for the growth of one rider or to fit multiple riders. As the customer, you will be given many choices to create a tricycle that offers just the right amount of support for the rider to experience the freedom of cycling and reap the many health benefits of improving/ maintaining range of motion, reinforcing reciprocal leg motion, addressing motor planning concerns, and improving overall mobility.
This page will help guide you through the process of ordering either the AS2000 (20) or AS2600 (26). The Critical Measurement for determining the size of the tricycle is the Inseam Measurement. The Inseam Measurement is the distance between the bottom of the rider’s heel to the top of the rider’s inner thigh. Make sure the rider’s inseam measurement matches the inseam range for the adaptive tricycle you are choosing.
The AS2000 Standard Frame is designed for riders with inseam measurement between 23in.- 34in. The bike’s 35in. extra-wide rear stance provides excellent stability. However, for those concerned with limited space, an AS 2000 Narrow (31in.) Frame is also available and is perfect for traveling through narrow doorways in schools and therapy centers. The AS 2000 Extended Frame lengthens the frame by 5in. and accommodates riders with hyperextension.
The AS2600 Standard Frame is the largest single-rider bike made by Freedom Concepts. It provides larger adults with the opportunity to stay active as they get older. It is designed for riders with inseam measurement of 25in.+. This frame in 35in. in width and DOES NOT have Narrow or Extended options available.
Seating System
In Required Step 1 you will select the components of the Seating System. The Standard Seating System is tilted back slightly (3 degrees) from fully upright creating an optimal angle for pedaling. In Required Step 1 you will choose between a Child Seat and an Adult Seat and either a High Back or a Low Back. Please refer to Photo Gallery under Main Product Image for pictures of seat choices, both style and size, including a measurement chart. All Seats come with an Adjustable Lap Belt with Side Release Buckle to secure the rider in place. All High Back Seats also come with an Adjustable Chest Strap with Side Release Buckle.
Seat Styles include:
- Standard Child or Adult Seat which offers the fit and function required for most riders.
- Pommel Seat has a 2in. raised pommel which helps to keep the rider further back on the seat (discourages sliding forward) while promoting leg abduction (moving legs away from midline). This seat promotes greater stability of the seated posture.
- Narrow Seat has a slightly narrower nose of the seat to aid with leg clearance during pedaling.
- Narrow Pommel Seat combines the features of the Pommel Seat and the Narrow Seat with a 2in. raised pommel and a slightly narrower nose of the seat.
If you have chosen a tricycle with a High Back, you will also be able to add a Headrest. Headrests are available in 2 styles: Adjustable and Adjustable with Occiput Support Cushion. The Adjustable Headrest extends the seat back height an additional 7in. and allows the entire upper body to be supported. It is easily removed. The Adjustable Headrest with an Occiput Support Cushion provides additional neck support for the rider. The cushion is attached with Velcro and can be removed or adjusted as required. If you choose one of the Adjustable Headrests you can also purchase an Adjustable Sunshade Canopy (Rain Cover) . The Sunshade Canopy requires the headrest for attachment.
Chain Guard (Required Step 3) offers a choice of Chain Guards. The Standard Chain Guard will match the color of the frame that has been chosen. The ABS Enclosed Chain Guard is black and is recommended for multi-user environments.
Steering and Brakes
Handlebars (Required Step 4) are attached to the U Bar. A Quick Release Lever allows the handlebars to be moved out of the way during transfers. The lever also allows the handlebars to be adjusted for different arm lengths. Choices of Handlebars include: Standard Hoop Handlebars which are adjustable across 3 planes of movement making it possible to accommodate any upper extremity positioning needs. The right and left sides of the hoop can be adjusted independently from one another. Other options include: Enclosed Hoop, High Rise, and Wide. Please refer to Photo Gallery under Main Product Image for pictures.
Rear Steer Handle can be added in Required Step 4 and allows the caregiver to help with forward movement and steering. A hand brake for caregiver use can be placed on the Rear Steer Handle.
The bike comes standard with 2 Hand Brakes. Hand brakes are placed/ positioned on the tricycle per customer preference. Placement of the second brake must differ from the first brake position. Options for placement include:
- Left Handlebar *Not available for High Rise Handlebars.
- Right Handlebar *Not available for High Rise Handlebars.
- Rear Steering Handle *Must purchase Rear Steering Handle.
- T-bar Standard handle directly behind seat. Please refer to Photo Gallery under Main Product Image for labeled picture.
Standard on all Freedom Concepts Bikes is a Manual Parking/ Transfer Brake located on the right rear wheel. This brake should always be engaged when transferring riders on and off the bike.
The Steering Mechanism is adjustable. It can be locked or unlocked depending on whether the rider is able to steer on their own. When the steering mechanism is locked, the rider cannot control the direction of the tricycle. The bike will only move forward. This is especially beneficial to new riders who may not be able to safely steer or cannot keep their hands on the handlebars.
Propulsion/ Pedal Power/ Gearing Options
- Direct Drive- This Gear Option offers a direct correlation between the pedals moving and the tricycle moving. When the pedals move forward the bike moves forward. When the pedals are moved backwards the tricycle goes backwards. If the rider stops pedaling on their own and a caregiver is pushing the bike forward using the steering handle, the pedals will still go around. For brand new riders and for some riders who may have difficulty understanding cause and effect, this is the quickest way for a rider to understand “When I push down on the pedals, I move the bike.” This Gear Option will also allow the rider to pedal backwards first to set the most advantageous pedal position for initiating forward movement of the tricycle. When choosing Direct Drive, you will be asked to choose the Pedal Power: Extra Easy, Easy, Average, or Challenging.
- Free Wheel- This is the Gearing Option that will allow the rider to coast. When the rider pushes down on the pedal, the bike will move forward. When they stop pedaling and have established enough forward momentum for the bike to continue to move forward, they will coast. If a caregiver pushes the bike forward using the steering handle and the rider is too tired to pedal, they can rest their legs while the bike moves forward. For riders who do not understand the correlation between the pedals moving forward and the bike moving forward, this will slow down their learning curve as they may think “Oh look, I’m not pedaling and I’m moving! This is better!” When choosing Free Wheel, you will be asked to choose the Pedal Power: Easy, Average, or Challenging.
- On/Off Pin Reciprocator- Choosing this option will provide both Direct Drive and Free Wheel options. Pull out the on/off pin and the bike will be set in Free Wheel. Push the pin back in and the pedals will be fully engaged in Direct Drive mode. When choosing the On/Off Pin Reciprocator, you will also be asked to choose the Pedal Power: Easy or Average.
- TEC Drive- This gearing allows the rider to switch between Easy, Average and Challenging pedaling. This Gearing Option allows for Direct Drive ONLY. If this option is purchased the location of the shifter will also need to be chosen. Choices for placement are Right Handlebar (NOT available with High Rise Handlebars), Rear Steering Handle (MUST purchase Rear Steering Handle in Required Step 4) or T-Bar.
- REC Drive- A popular Geared Drive System that offers control of the pedal speed on-the-fly with a flick of a switch. REC Drive features Easy, Average and Neutral Gearing. Neutral Gearing disengages the pedals from the wheels completely and the rider can rest while a caregiver offers help with forward motion. Easy and Average gear settings are Direct Drive. If this option is purchased, the location of the shifter will also need to be chosen. Choices for placement are Right Handlebar (NOT available with High Rise Handlebars), Rear Steering Handle (MUST purchase Rear Steering Handle in Required Step 4) or T-Bar.
- 3 Speed OR 5 Speed Coaster Brake with Reverse - These Gearing Options give more choices and flexibility than a single-speed or dual-speed Gear Option. This can be helpful to riders as they tackle pedaling uphill, downhill, or on different types of flat terrain. With this gear option, when the rider stops pedaling, he/she can coast. When the rider pushes back on the pedal the brakes are applied. These Gearing Options are also beneficial in multi-user environments with riders of different skill levels. If this option is purchased, the location of the shifter will also need to be chosen. Choices for placement are Right Handlebar (NOT available with High Rise Handlebars), Rear Steering Handle (MUST purchase Rear Steering Handle in Required Step 4) or T-Bar.
Tire Style (Required Step 5)- There are 3 Tire Styles to choose from for the AS2000. Smooth Solid Tires are recommended for indoor riding and are puncture proof (“Never-Go-Flat”) because they are not filled with air. This is the tire of choice for many multi-user environments such as schools and therapy clinics. Pneumatic Tires (Air-filled) Knobby or Smooth are recommended for outdoor riding. The Knobby Pneumatic Tires will offer the greatest degree of traction which will ultimately mean a little more force will be required for pedaling. When ordering a Pneumatic Tire for the AS200 you can also upgrade to a Heavy Duty Rim for the wheel. The AS2600 comes with a Street Pneumatic Tire ONLY.
Front Fork (Required Step 5)- There are 3 Fork Styles to choose from for the AS2000. The Standard Rigid Chrome Fork, the Suspension Fork, and the Adjustable Tilt Fork. The Suspension Fork offers shock absorption from the jarring impact of rough terrain and gives the rider a more comfortable ride. The Adjustable Fork can add up to 7 degrees more tilt of the entire bike frame thereby increasing the posterior (backwards) tilt of the seat without needing to make any other adjustments to ensure that the rider can reach the pedals. The AS2600 comes with a Suspension Fork as standard. The Adjustable Tilt Fork is not available on the 2600.
Electric Assist Motor (Accessory in Required Step 5)- The Adventurer Series Tricycles can be purchased with an Electric Assist Motor to aid riders on long bike rides. To purchase this option you must select a Suspension Fork. A Rear Platform is also Required and will automatically be added when the Electric Assist Motor is selected.
Pedal Style/ Footplates (Required Step 6)- Helping riders with special needs to keep their feet securely on the pedals can be an issue. Several styles of pedals/ footplates are offered to ensure success.
- Mountain Pedal with Toe Cage- This pedal is offered in one size. Mountain Pedals are recommended for riders that have some control over their foot placement and are most effective for individuals with high muscle tone who tend to point their toes when exerting pressure on the pedal.
- Neoprene Adjustable Footplates- The Neoprene Adjustable Footplate is offered in 3 sizes. The Neoprene material used to create the heel cup is flexible. There are 2 straps on this footplate. The ankle strap has a side release buckle closure. The strap across the foot has a Velcro closure. This footplate offers a quick and easy way to maintain proper positioning and pedal pressure and is recommended for children with low muscle tone. SIZES- Small 4in. x 7in.; Medium 4.5in. x 10in.; Large 5in. x 11.5in.; XLarge 6in. x 12in.
- Molded ABS Footplates- Molded ABS Footplates have a rigid plastic heel cup and 2 straps to secure the rider’s foot to the pedal. The heel cup helps the rider to generate force when the pedaling. The ankle strap has a side release buckle closure. The strap across the foot has a Velcro closure. This Footplate is designed to provide precise positioning for children with spasticity and helps with knee flexion and alignment of the leg. SIZES- Small 3in. x 7in.; Medium 3in. x 10.75in.; Large 3in. x 11.5in.; XLarge 4in. x 13in.
- Molded ABS with Ratcheting Straps-This is the best option if you are looking for maximum support to keep the rider’s feet in position. This foot plate is designed for those riders whose foot seems to pull away from the pedal no matter how you have attempted to secure it. It has the rigid plastic heel cup with ratchet straps at the ankle and over the foot. This footplate is recommended for children with plantar flexion (toe points downward.) SIZES- Small 3in. x 7in.; Medium 3in. x 10.75in.; Large 3in. x 11.5in.; XLarge 4in. x 13in.
- Pulley Strings- Pulley Strings attach to the pedals of the bike to help keep pedals level. Please refer to Photo Gallery under Main Product Image for picture. Front Pulley assists are appropriate for riders who tend to point their toes while pedaling (foot moves into plantar flexion). The Rear Pulley helps self-level the pedal.
- Leg support (Brace)- If the rider requires support to assist with alignment of one or both legs, a Leg Support Brace can be attached to a Foot Plate with Molded ABS Heel Cup ONLY. Leg Support can be added to one or both pedals. Calf Circumference Measurement is required. If the rider plans to wear an AFO in addition to having the Leg Support on the Foot Plate, the Calf Circumference Measurement should be made when the AFO is in place. Leg Supports require use of the Rear Pulley System which will be included if a Leg Support is ordered.
Bells, Horns and Decals (Required Step 7)
All Adventurer Series Tricycles come standard with a Bell, a Horn and Decals. Bells are offered in several colors. Squeaky Horns are offered in many different animal shapes. Please refer to Photo Gallery under Main Product Image for pictures of Decal choice (Racer, Hibiscus). The tricycle also comes standard with Safety Flag and Wheel Reflectors.
Crank Arm Length (Required Step 8)- The Crank Arm is the lever that the pedal is attached to. With a shorter crank arm, the pedal will feel a little easier to pedal than with a longer crank arm. The 5in. Alloy Crank Arm is recommended for the AS2000, but a 3in. and 4in. Crank Arm are also available. The 5in. Alloy Crank Arm is also recommended for the AS2600, but you may also choose a 3in., 4 in. or 6in. length. If your rider would benefit from a shorter Crank Arm Length on one side or both, a Crank Arm Length Shortener is available and will reduce the length of the Crank Arm by .5 in.
