Rifton began in 1977 as an offshoot of Community Playthings, a leading manufacturer of early childhood furniture and equipment. When designers visited a home for children with disabilities in Connecticut, a therapist asked if they could custom-build a chair for one of their residents. Over the next several month’s similar requests trickled in. Before long designers and workers began envisioning an entirely new and different line of products specifically for people with special needs and the Rifton product line came into being. Those same early years saw a growing sensitivity in society to people with special needs. Americans increasingly recognized every person’s right to be treated with dignity and respect.
