Understanding Head Control

The head is a critical component of the human body. Not only does it house the brain, but it is the "gateway" for many other functions. Often we set a goal for independent head control, but what does that really mean? Independent head control means that an individual has the ability to voluntarily move their head to communicate, breathe and eat all on their own. The head needs to be "upright" (or in line with the spine) to help keep the airway open for breathing and the throat open for eating. In addition, having the ability to turn the head side to side or move it up and down allows for interaction with the surrounding environment. The movements of the head also provide the opportunity for social communication with eyes, through words or facial expressions.
