Therapeutic Supine Positioning Aides- Support for Lying on Back
If a person is not able to move themselves between different positions when lying down, it is important that they are assisted to reposition their body often to redistribute pressure, improve circulation and prevent skin breakdown. When assisting with positioning, careful attention to body alignment and postural support is important. To make that easier, therapists on our staff have put together a collection of products that can assist with therapeutic positioning. On this page you will find products that can help to position someone on their back. The supine position is often a preferred position for people with poor head control. This position frees the arms to move against gravity with the head and neck in a fully supported position. Some people who are not capable of moving against gravity or who have abnormalities in muscle tone may require extra postural supports to maintain neutral (without rotation) and symmetrical body alignment which can prevent or slow down the development of muscle contractures (permanent shortening of muscles) and positioning deformities.
Rolls and Wedges are classic pieces of positioning equipment that have stood the test of time. If custom positioning in supine is needed, consider the Versa Form Plus Positioning Pillow.
Versatile Positioning Products
When considering special needs positioning products, versatility is a plus. With that in mind, check out the Tumble Forms Tadpole Pediatric Positioner or Universal Grasshopper Positioning System. These products are especially beneficial if you are purchasing equipment that will have multiple users with a wide variety of positioning needs. Relatively new to the market is the Leckey Squiggles Early Activity System which is a highly versatile system with components that are held in place on the base by Velcro that accepts the various positioning pieces wherever support is needed for each individual child.
